Weekly Geeks: Discover New Blogs

The challenge this week was to discover new (to you) blogs from those who signed up for Weekly Geeks. Here are five that stood out for me:

  1. Bold Blue Adventure – I liked its well-organized, uncluttered layout. I took a peek at her list of books read by month and found some interesting titles (such as The Three Incestuous Sisters – what is that about??) that I will add to my LibraryThing queue. I didn’t entirely agree with her review of The Blind Assassin (it’s my favorite Atwood novel), but she offered an interesting perspective on it.
  2. Everyday Reads – A reader with eclectic tastes. How eclectic? She has reviews of The Virgin Suicides, Notes from Underground, and Fables: Legends in Exile. That’s my kind of reader. :)
  3. Adventures in Reading – A quirky reader with a varied book list. There are entries about Edgar Allan Poe, Japanese literature, and even an entry about words she likes. There are also two entries devoted to Nancy Drew! (Here and here.) Yes, the series is indeed terribly dated, but it brings me back to my own nerdy childhood, so I’m definitely sold. Now that I think about it, though, how the eff did I manage to relate to Nancy Drew – described by the reviewer as “the too perfect, wealthy, Aryan daughter” – as a child in the impoverished Philippines?
  4. Book Garden – Short, incisive reviews on books about a myriad of subjects. Jen Clair tackles historical fiction and young adult fiction and also conducts give-aways on a regular basis. A reader that’s both smart and generous. What’s not to like? :)
  5. The Deus Ex Machina Complex (And Other Theories) – An irreverent reader who describes herself as “definitely not better than bacon … but a huge fan of boys kissing.” She seems to be an avowed nerd with an acerbic wit and a fellow fan girl with random obsessions. The words kindred spirit come to mind. :P

I definitely found a lot of new blogs that I will read on a regular basis. Because I subscribe to the blogs I read, I usually become unaware of what their blogs look like after a while. After seeing all the pretty layouts, I think it’s time for me to revamp mine a little bit, perhaps clean up the categories and add a blogroll. All in all, this was a really fun challenge and I’m really looking forward to next week’s theme. Reading the opinions of so many talented and enthusiastic readers may have been just what I needed to get out of my reading/reviewing slump. :)

  • Thank you for the kind words Chayenne!

  • Nancy Drew is fascinating and I had no idea how fascinating until I started reading her books.

  • @Lightheaded – You’re very welcome. :)

@bookchronicle – I used to read the old-school Nancy Drew (hardcover, musty, beautiful, pulp-type cover art) and the modern ’80s redux, which I also did with The Hardy Boys series. I also have used to have an obsession with Sweet Valley High. All those series definitely depict an America that doesn’t exist; before I moved to the US, I thought that’s how all Americans lived. :P

  • I’ve been having trouble posting comments today. Evidently this one did not take either, so I’m trying again. Thanks for including me on your list! And you’ve provided me with a new blog for my list!

  • Had to say the picture of the little puppy in the bookcase is adorable. I’ll stop by again.

  • al;skdhh;ffff HELLO!

It’s taken my forever to get around to reading through all the responses this week. So many! But here I am, totally not ignoring people who are linking me!

So, you’re one of the few people (and I’m totally serious) that I didn’t have it my feed reader. This project was pretty hard for me, I was already watching everyone. SILENTLY, but uhhh not in a creepy manner. So hey! Nice to meet you!

Now excuse me why I go scrounge around in your book archives like a big old nerdfighter. >.>
